The Benifits of Working From Home
Health is often taken for granted, never to be missed until it’s no longer there; like most, in this diverse society, I too took my health for granted in my twenties. Diagnosed with my current illness in August of 2004, at the age of twenty-one, my life rapidly changed after hearing a single word –- terminal. Daily, I live with the brutality of chronic pain; a fight I will never give up. A survivor, never a statistic, to succeed and move forward I made changes to accommodate for a life with chronic pain and terminal illness. No longer could I work in a public setting, graduating with a degree in nursing and human psychology just months prior to diagnoses, I obtained a journalism degree – completing my education at home. Internally, I contemplated if I could go to a local college through the advances of the Internet; I could, also, work from home. For many the option to work from home is the best choice for them, for various reasons; the option to work from home also has many benefits.
- Working from ones home is a greener alternative, as environmental awareness in this twenty-first century has grew in importance. This option cuts out gas guzzling automobiles, carpooling, or public transit; as there is no commute. Simply a few steps can put one in his/her office or work space, eliminating any negative environmental impact.
- Those who choose to work from home are in full control of themselves, without the domination of a controlling boss. Self control allows for one to work at their own stride, set their own goals and deadlines, create a more flexible work schedule, multitask when bored, work at various hours of the day and night, accommodate for sickness, adapt for family time, and more… Self control leads to lower stress, decreasing illnesses that may result from a stressful work environment and a overbearing boss with unreasonable expectations.
- In an economic recession, with frugal living on the rise, working from home allows one to save money. The at home worker in New York City may save money by giving up his/her automobile; while most save money on gas, work clothing, morning “on the go” breakfasts, fast-food lunches, parking garage costs, automobile maintenance, public transportation costs, vending machine snacks, and more. Needs such as the Internet, phone, office supplies, and more are tax deductions; meaning the money spent for needs will be received back — office square footage can even be claimed on these taxes.
- Working from home yields an increase in ones productiveness. Depending, one may choose to work on a single assignment at a time without being pulled into meetings; both scheduled and nonscheduled. This increase in production increases without negative influences that are found in all work environments; these parasites often barge, without invitation, into ones office to gossip about a boss or co-worker — consuming the workers time for nothing.
- Various comforts can be found if one works from home; such as setting his/her own pace, working on familiar technology devices, and creating break time when break time is needed. One may also choose to work in his/her pajamas or attire not suitable for a work environment; practically anything goes when one chooses to work from home — even working naked if one chooses or having a afternoon pick me up session of steamy desk sex.
- Mothers and fathers, who choose to work from home, develop a closer bond with their children; which is perfect for younger children who do not yet go to school. The expenses of daycare or childcare is waved by this choice; reducing the chances for a sick child. No price tag can be pinned on this quality bonding time, where the parent can take a break to teach and play with their child(ren), and go back to working at a later time in the day
